  Chapter One

Gabe walked out of the bed and breakfast. He had only been back for a few days and already he wanted to leave. It was painful as well as joyful to watch Rylan with his family. His twin was certainly the family man. He could see how much he loved Aviana and Mckayla. It made his chest ache to have something like that.

He took on patrol even though it was only mid-day. It had been eerily quiet lately; even Victor was on edge. Victor was in charge of their ever expanding group on earth and if he was on edge that was a bad sign because that male was good at keeping his cool.

Gabe looked up to see Cal and Paige coming out of the bed and breakfast. Cal was Victor’s brother and Paige was his soul-bonded. Everyone was paired up now except for him and Joaquin—not that he could ever see him with a mate. A fleeting smile rushed across his face as he acknowledged that he couldn’t see himself with a mate either. He spent too much time growing up trying to rescue his brother. He could practically feel the darkness eating his soul.

He stopped and waited for them to catch up to him.

“Hi Gabe, we didn’t know you were out here.”

“Hi Paige, good to see both of you. If I had realized you were coming out I would have waited for you. Where are you off to?”

“We’re just going for a walk. I know summer is almost here but I am still in the ‘I’m so glad winter is gone mode.’ Paige on the other hand loves all the snow.” Cal leaned over and gave her a quick kiss on the lips.

“That’s because I was born in Cali; I never saw snow. I still think it’s a gift.”

Gabe and Cal shivered and laughed.

“All right you can both stop.”

  “Sorry, beautiful.”

“That’s better.” She shot a grin at him. “Where are you going, Gabe?”

“Just patrolling, I don’t like how quiet it’s been around here.”

“None of us like it. We haven’t heard a peep out of Zuhun but he’s still around. I catch glimpses but he stays far away.”

“Do you think he’s decided to leave us alone?”

“No, I think he’s coming to terms with the ones he can’t touch, but the rest of us—he’s making plans to make our lives miserable,” Cal said taking a look around him.

“I agree. We may not see him but he’s watching, waiting. The fact that he’s not made a move in the last couple of months tells me whatever he’s planning won’t be nice.” Gabe grabbed his hair and secured it with a leather tie at the nape of his neck.

“Are you planning on staying for a while?” Paige asked him.

Was he staying? He was already restless; the desire to walk and not stop was weighing his shoulders down. It almost felt like an urge to run, to be free and never look back.

“I think I’ll stick around for a while.” His mouth spoke while his mind screamed no. “I’m going to head toward town and leave you to the beauty of the fields.

“Thanks, I think we can put them to good use,” Cal grinned at him.

Gabe laughed when Paige playfully hit Cal on the arm.

“Later,” Gabe turned and walked off.

  “Gabe?”

He gave a sigh. Of course Rylan was checking on him, he could feel something was wrong. Trying to hide his feelings from his twin wasn’t working.

“Gabe is not here; please leave a message at the sound of the beep. Beeeep!”

  “You aren’t funny, Gabe.”

“Yes I am, Rylan; you’re just too caught up in your family to realize it.”

  “They’re your family too.”

“I know. That’s not what I meant. I’m glad you have them, Ry. It’s just right now they are the ones you need to worry about, not me. I’ll be fine.”

“I’d be a piss poor brother if I forgot about you, Gabe. You’re my family and I take care of you just like I take care of Aviana and Mckayla.

“I know, but right now I’m good. Taking a walk to town. It’s daylight, what can happen to me?”

  “Just take care.”

“Always, kiss my niece for me.”

  “Will do.”

Gabe broke the connection and drew in a deep breath. Rylan could feel him spinning out of control.

Everyone was out. It was a beautiful Saturday and the people of the town were taking advantage of it. They were in the streets calling out to friends and it made him feel lonely and somehow unappreciated.

“Gabe!” The sound of that voice had him stopping cold in his tracks and looking for a place to hide at the same time.

“Melissa,” he said to the little shifter crossing the street.

“I am so glad I ran into you. Do you have any plans?”

  “Not really,” he sighed.

Why couldn’t he be attracted to her? Maybe it was the hint of evil in her. Most of the shifters he knew were honorable. He was a shifter even if his other form wasn’t native to the Earth. Melissa was a wolf, but there was a vibe he got from her that let him know she was off, different. He suspected more than once that she was working with Zuhun, but that would be crazy. She would be a snack to him.

“Do you want to get a bite to eat with me?” She looked him over like he was prey and she was figuring out the best way to bring him down.

“No, I think I’m going to walk over to the gallery. Victor is supposed to be there.”

  “Another time maybe.”

  “Maybe.”

He watched her walk away and slowly his stomach unknotted. There was a time when casual would have been okay with him. The last couple of months he couldn’t stand it. Casual with Melissa was something he didn’t think he would live through and he meant every word of that.

Finally feeling safe, he walked toward the gallery that Victor and Cal shared.

  *~*~*~*

Someone was watching her. Stopping, she bent over and tied her tennis shoe and started jogging. This was the first day of Taya’s exercise program, the last thing she needed was some creep following her. She already felt like everybody was watching her, judging her. No matter how hard she tried, she didn’t seem to be able to drop the extra weight. Her doctor told her that forty pounds needed to go.

She had tried to tell her doctor she was in good shape. That went over like a lead balloon. Her doctor was so thin she actually made Taya nervous. So she skipped lunch and went for a run instead. She’d eat a green salad later instead of the chicken salad she was dreaming of.

She shrugged her shoulders. The middle of her back was burning like someone couldn’t keep their eyes off her. She took a detour on the trail she was using. It was a new path, one she had never paid attention to before. She walked almost every day in the summer but now she was running—doctor’s orders.

The path seemed to be taking her deeper into the woods and the feeling of being watched was going away. She stopped, out of breath, doctor or no doctor she was walking. It was beautiful down here. Why hadn’t she ever explored this far before?

Because your alone and it’s dangerous down this far. Her inner voice warned her and it was right. She turned around feeling a nervous flutter in her stomach while catching a shadow out of the corner of her eyes.

“Hello?” she called out. No one answered; she shrugged and started walking the way she came.

A branch from a tree swung making a noise; she looked around for an animal. Seeing nothing, she walked faster.

Footsteps sounded behind her. “This isn’t funny, show yourself!” she shouted.

Nothing happened. She picked up the pace turning it into a small jog. Dark clouds rolled in overhead making the woods scary and diminishing some of her vision. The path wasn’t paved and now she wasn’t sure she was still on it.

She ran, panting hard each breath filling her lungs until they burned. She had to get out of there ran through her mind followed by a gruesome news story of a woman found dead in the woods. She was the woman. Some poor hiker would discover her body and be traumatized for life but she would be dead. Her foot caught on something protruding from the ground and she fell, knocking all the air from her lungs. She made a strangled sound of pain as laughter seemed to surround her.

“Help,” she cried out. The only help she would get would be from herself. Pushing herself up, she realized her hands and her knees were skinned. She did the best she could do wiping them off and then started looking for the path again. She was definitely off of it.

No running, she told herself. She would miss the path and maybe even fall again. She took off at a brisk pace acting like she was a speed walker. ‘You’ll be all right, Taya.’ She spoke to herself. If she made it out of this alive, she was finding a new doctor as well as a new place to live.

She didn’t have a choice on the new place to live but she’d find somewhere she assured herself.

“I’m coming for you.” An eerie voice came through the trees.

She bit her lip. She would not be the stupid chick in the movies who got so frightened she ran right into the arms of the killer, although she now had sympathy for that woman.

She looked down the trail. Her heart was beating so fast she wanted to let tears of joy fall when she stumbled back over the path, there wasn’t time for that. She needed to get out of there. Her joy disappeared into despair when a large branch came out of nowhere and knocked her to the ground. She tried to stand and fell again. She could feel it coming closer whatever it was or whoever he was, was almost on her. Flipping over, she started to crawl. There was no way she was just waiting to be killed. Her heart was in her throat as she heard the whisper soft movements through the woods. She crawled faster and thought of trying to get up on her feet once again.

Curling her fingers around the slender trunk of a tree, she pulled herself to her feet. Her body swayed saying this may not have been one of her better ideas, but her desperation to get away was prodding her on. She grabbed a broken tree branch and used it as a walking stick.

She wasn’t going to make it. His breath was almost close enough for her to feel. Propping up against a tree, she would use her branch as a weapon. Just as the trees in front of her began to shake, she heard a sound to her left. Her head snapped toward it. A couple came out the woods making kissy faces at each other.

“Are you okay?” the male asked.

“Yes, just lost. Can you help me?” Her eyes were still glued to the woods in front of her. The trees had stopped shaking and now she could swear she heard those whisper soft steps backing up.

“Sure, we were just on our way back,” the female said. “Oh, you’re hurt, let us help you.”

  “Thank you.”

It was slow going but there was comfort in numbers. Before she knew it she was back at the beginning of the trails. She thanked them again and hobbled painfully toward her home.

She limped into her apartment building and stopped at her mailbox only to find an eviction notice. It wasn’t a surprise; she testified for a couple that the supervisor had treated them unfairly. Although she was holding onto hope that a new place would open up before he chumped up a reason to get rid of her.

Sighing she went to repack the few things she had unpacked recently.

  Chapter Two

Her life wasn’t going well. She’d only been in Newburg for a year. This was the third apartment she had mostly due to the jobs. Honestly, she wondered how she even got here. Her last job before she came was as a hospital administrator. Maybe she needed to see a shrink. Mysterious things started happening, a cat was killed and left on her front porch. There were dead animals in her office at work.

She went to the police who said it was some freak following her, but she knew it was more. Whoever it was kept getting closer. Soon she couldn’t sleep and then she couldn’t think. Finally, she wasn’t in any shape to do her job so she walked away before they fired her.

Everyone agreed that was the best solution. Her parents couldn’t figure out wha
t was wrong with her and the sadness in their normally happy faces was killing her. In the end she decided to take a vacation—it was a way of saying she wasn’t running away when she was.

She picked someplace that was at the end of the world as far as she was concerned, left Nevada, and headed for Pennsylvania. It was over two thousand miles away; whoever was following her would forget about her there.

But it wasn’t over. Someone had followed her or maybe she was back to being crazy. She packed her bag and set it by the door while she packed the second bag. Her comfortable house was gone along with her nice job and the clothes she used to think she couldn’t live without. Life had a way of showing you what was important and the only thing she ever had that meant something was her parents and she ended up leaving them behind. Now she had nothing.

Leaving the key on the kitchen table, she closed the door behind her. There was a cute bed and breakfast in town, she would go there. She avoided it at first because her inner voice assured her life would never be the same if she went there. It no longer mattered though because her life really would never be the same.

She stopped to hail a cab but it kept going because that was the kind of day she was having.

Darkness was settling and her heart was beating fast knowing she had been lucky to make it out the woods alive. She grabbed her bags making sure her purse was secure on her arm and started walking, more like limping. The bed and breakfast was on the other end of the town a couple of miles away.

A blue SUV pulled up next to her and began to match her pace. It crawled slowly down the street and the window that was partially down came all the way down. She wouldn’t turn her head to look not wanting to be bothered.

“Hi,” a female’s voice came out of the SUV.

She wanted to turn but resisted. What did it matter if it was a woman, they could be serial killers too.
