Damon took the bite of the creature that was after River. He wanted to assure her that everything would be okay but the brute of an animal was going for his hind leg. He spun and met it head on his claws tearing into its skin while its claws caught him on the side.

The animal moved back, and he watched Damon sniffing the air. Damon snarled that male thought he was king here and he was before he came along. He shook out his body ignoring the wound. He had been stuck in that frail body for too long. Now he would rule the world. He roared as he began to stalk the animal in front of him. He sent out a call to every animal within the sound of his voice that a new king had arrived. He issued a challenge even as he dealt with the one in front of him. They charged teeth biting searching for a grip on the neck. He took his claws and ripped the animal's flank.

He retreated, and Damon stood there with the blood of the former king in his claws. The animal was limping. There would be no retreat for him. Damon leaped and took his neck between his teeth killing him with one vicious bite.

He roared again ready to take on any challengers. No one came out, no one answered. He was king, that was how it should be. Turning around he looked at the delicious morsel that was scooting backward.

He sniffed the air, the scent confused him. He was close to the ground as he stalked her.

“Good kitty.” He stopped at the sounds she made. Would she make more if he stood still?

  No, he moved again.

“You don’t want to eat me I don’t taste good. Well, I do taste good but only when you’re a male. You said you would come after me if I ran and here you are. I didn’t run though Sloan took me.”

The sounds she was making were coming faster but he liked them so he stalked her slowly so he wouldn’t have to eat her right away. He sniffed the air then got close enough to scent her. He knew that scent and liked it. It brought him comfort. He was king he didn’t need comfort. Against his will, he head came down on the thick portion of her.

He wouldn’t get a lot of meat from her, maybe he could let her live since she wasn’t big enough for dinner. His head rubbed against her again, and his body curled up next to her.

“Come back to me Damon. We still have a lot of life to live. Together we will get rid of Sloan and The Darkness. We’ll have children.” Children? She was refusing to be his mate earlier, and now she was thinking of little Damon’s.

“Do you want boys or girls?” Her hand came up to stroke his fur. It was soft, and he was warm she laid down next to him knowing he would protect her. She fell asleep.

  Chapter Fourteen

She woke up to find the beast looking at her. Now that it was daylight she could see him better. He was orange with black stripes, and he was huge. Bigger than the monster that came at her last night. He was also Damon. What did she have to do to get the male to come back to her?

“Damon, I miss you. I’ve decided we shouldn’t run from each other. So if you come back to me, I won’t be running, and we will see what happens together.”

He opened his mouth loud and roared.

“That’s about all I have to give. I was thinking about little Damon’s last night, but we can’t make those if you look like that.” She sat quietly and watched, it looked like there was a war going on inside of him. Was there a chance he may never come back?

The animal reached for her, but the male picked her up. One minute she was looking at grass the next she was back in the small house in Sin City. He took the steps, several at a time until he walked into the room where she recovered with Nicolas’s help. Laying her down on the bed he searched until he found a laser and cleaning cloth for her feet.

  “Damon?”

“I saw it all. He dragged you to that gate and then threw you over. Whatever he is it isn’t human. The first animal you came across was a Bollo. It can change its shape by sectioning its body off. It loves to imitate chains for some unknown reason. It’s deadly.”

She was nodding listening to him speak. Her feet were in his hands while he carefully cleaned them one at a time. He stood and retrieved his numbing spray taking the pain away when he sprayed them.

“You’re a badass Little Warrior. I saw you make it through that crack in the wall and then climb that cliff.”

  “It wasn’t that hard.”

“Yes it was, don’t put yourself down.”

He picked up her other foot and began healing the damage with the laser in his hand.

“Why are you bleeding in other places?”

“Sloan threw me against a couple of walls for fun. I’ll be okay.”

He flexed his fingers so they wouldn’t become claws before he reached for his scanner.

“Damon what’s on your shoulder and arm?” She was tracing what looked like a miniature version of what she had seen earlier.

“Did I tell you that when the Scientists made us they used both humanoid and animal DNA.”

  “Yes.”

“He is one of my fathers, and he wasn’t happy about not being able to come out and play. So, he decided he would rule the preserve and eat you for dinner. It was your voice and then your amazing scent that changed his mind. He didn’t want to let you go, but he didn’t want to leave either. So, we made a deal. I would wear him on me that way he could see you, smell you, and protect you. He can also feel you when you touch me.”

  “Do you want him gone?”

“He will help me to protect you, besides don’t I look badass.”

  “You do.”

“You have some internal damage River. I’m going to put you in the medbed my brother provided.”

  “Why is it still here?”

“He thinks you may be accident prone.” He caressed her face before bending over to kiss her. “It will only be for a few hours.” He lifted her up and took her to the medbed.

“You’ll sleep.” She held his hand for a minute before she nodded and he closed the top.

He laid his hand on the top of the medbed and waited until he was sure she was sleeping. She was already making herself at home in his heart.

He looked at his shoulder before he raised a hand to touch the symbol. The Ang were a symbiotic people. The humanoids would wait until the right other half showed up. They were usually born on the same day almost at the same minute. The two would become one. The Scientists had captured the warrior part of their nature one day. He often wondered what happened to the humanoid who never met up with his other half. The beast or the warrior as he liked to be called could imprint on the humanoid, but would only do so if he felt there was something of great importance he was protecting.

The warrior felt that River was worth protecting.

She opened her eyes to find Damon looking at her smiling.

  “All better?”

He reached down and helped her sit up. “All better. There were some internal injuries, but they’re healed.”

“Did you miss me?” She had dreamed about him while she was asleep. She wasn’t sure it was possible, but she did.

  “I did miss you.”

She stood and walked into his arms. “I made some decisions while I was being chased by big monsters.”

  “What did you decide.”

“I’m not running. I don’t know what’s happening between us or why we’re so popular, but I’m not running.”

“Being popular is overrated.” He leaned toward her even as she raised up and they met in a kiss.

“When I finally meet my mate, we will go through several layers of intimacy.”

“That sounds like fun.” She was nuzzling his neck while he caressed her hair.

“Things won’t get any easier River you almost died.”

“They’re not going to stop at almost Damon. Sloan wants me dead for whatever invisible sin I committed. All we have is right now. That’s the second conclusion I came to. I won’t give up right now with you. Do I want tomorrow?” A vision of children looking like Damon came back. “Yes, I want tomo
rrow, but all I can hold onto is today.”

“I’ll take today we’ll talk about tomorrow when it gets here.”

He picked her up and carried her to the bed.

  “I can walk you know.”

“It’s easier to keep track of you when you’re in my arms.” Laughter bubbled up from her, and he joined in.

He sat on the edge of the bed still holding her close.

“It feels strange, doesn’t it?” She turned around until she was sitting on his lap facing him with her legs on either side of his.

  “What feels strange?”

“Being here together in this room. It feels like just yesterday we didn’t know each other and didn’t have anyone to hold onto. Now we have this opportunity that we’re squeezing tight in our hands for fear of losing it. Every day feels precious, special because we know we don’t get tomorrow. It feels weird.”

She reached down and pulled up the hem of her sweater taking it over her head. She was wearing a black bra that cupped her small bouncing breast.

“Do you want me to try and talk to you when unveil a bounty like this?”

She bounced a little watching him watch her breast. Yeah, he was a keeper, and she wanted to have the chance to capture and hold his heart for life.

“If only I could take off my bra.” She made a halfhearted frustrated move to get it off.

He gave a deep chuckle that sounded more like a roar. It invaded her body making her belly pulse and her pussy cream. His hands went around her and unfastened the bra.

“My cat loves cream.” He gave a sound that sounded like a hiss and her pussy creamed again. Her panties were going to be soaked.

She backed up and stood to unbutton the top to her jeans. Her eyes were glued to his cock that was fighting against the fly of his pants.

“You may want to let that out.” Her voice was low and husky.

He stood his hands were shaky as he reached for his pants. “Let me help you.”

She moved closer and worked the button on his pants free before she unzipped him and let them fall to his feet.

“You won’t need these.” She pulled his boxers down.

  “River, Little Warrior.”

She placed her hand on his chest, and he sat on the bed. She bent over and freed his feet. Her tongue came out and licked her bottom lip before she kissed him. He gave a soft growl against her lips before he opened up. Her tongue invaded his mouth pulling his taste into her.

  “I need you, Damon.”

She needed to be closer to him to feel him in a way she hadn’t managed yet. She sank gracefully to her knees and licked the head of his cock.

“You don’t have to.” His voice was thick with desire.

Yes, she had to. He didn’t know what it felt like to be loved unconditionally. To have someone do something for him just because they wanted to and not because they were expecting something in return. Was this love? Probably not but she didn’t care all she cared about was the male in front of her. She wanted him, he wanted her and in her own way she wanted to love him.

She drew one finger up the underside of his cock and he hissed. Good mate. Her hands went to his balls they were so warm and full.

“Is all of that for me? Her voice was a sensual whisper.

“I’m going to pump you so full…” Her mouth closed over the head of his cock making him choke on his words while he roared in pleasure.

She sucked on him, his cock made a popping sound when she pulled her mouth away.

  “You were saying?”

“Suck me down, River. Love on me. Take me back into your hot little mouth.”

Her hand went around his cock. He was too thick for her to get her whole hand around but she didn’t care. She took his cock back in her mouth trying to get as much in as possible.

His hands went into her hair as he groaned his pleasure. She sucked hard enjoying the taste of him. There was a wildness mixed with peace. His warrior side combined with his healing nature and she sucked harder wanting it, wanting him inside of her.

A red hot feeling of need overcame her. There was intense pleasure when her mouth closed around him. The suction was incredible and hot it tingled at the base of her spine. She could feel tenderness, that she cared enough about him to want to do this. That’s when she realized these weren’t her feelings but his.

She pulled back and licked the head before she ran her tongue from the crown of his head to the base. Pinpricks of need and want raced up her spine.

He wanted her she didn’t know how she was feeling this but she could feel his joy and his desire. He was sharing his emotions with her. She leaned down and took one of his balls into her mouth sucking on it. His whole body jerked and a red haze covered her.

She was kissing and licking him as her hand stroked him hard. His big hand came down over hers and squeezed harder. When he lost it, she was going to lose it with him. She was so hot from his pleasure.

She engulfed his cock again sucking hard. She wanted to feel him pouring into her mouth. His hips were moving with a rapid, jerky thrust. Give it to me. I want it.

  “River.”

She couldn’t speak she simply sucked harder letting him know she wanted to taste him deep in her throat. He came with an animal growl that made her own hips bucked as she sucked on him swallowing everything he had to give.

His hand let lose the hair he was holding tight and began to pet her before he finally reached down and pulled her onto the bed with him.

“I never felt anything as good as that.”

She went to smile but instead fell into him.

  Chapter Fifteen

“Where are we?” The sky above was lavender, it was pretty, but it wasn’t home.

“This is the planet I was born on.”

A big sigh left her lips she thought she was alone for a few minutes. He was invisible until he started to speak.

  “How did we get here?”

“We’re in a memory, but I’m not sure which one.” He reached out taking her hand and drawing her to his side.”

“It’s both a curse and a blessing of our DNA that we are allowed to see our memories as well as the memories of the parents that donated their DNA.”

“I wish I could go back and see memories of my mother.” She gave him a sad smile. “Right now we need to understand this memory and how I came to be here.”

“You took a step closer to me. The closer you get the more you’ll be able to see.”

“I want to see if you want to share.”

“You may not want to see this. When I was younger, I had a problem. I didn’t want to kill and heal. It was setting up a dual personality within me. I felt like half of the DNA that created me were killers but the other half were peaceful healers. I was young, and I couldn’t bring the two halves together.”

They had steadily been walking. Now the sky overhead was blotted out by the building in front of them. It was big and black and looked like it didn’t belong where it was.

“How do you punish a boy that’s already stronger than you at ten Earth years old?”

They walked through the doors and down the stairs. The walls were wet, and the floors were sticky. She wasn’t going to like what he was about to show her.

The corner of her mouth quirked up when she saw him. He was so young and defiant. His eyes were blazing with hatred, and his smile was cocky. He stance said I don’t care what you do to me.

“So defiant, sure you can handle anything I throw at you. I’ll ask you one more time will you be the healer of your team and a killer when you’re not needed to heal.”

“No.” He spit the words at him, and the Scientist smiled.

“Thank you. Without your defiance, I may never have had a chance to do this. Bring him in.”

Dante walked in between to other Scientists. His eyes were flat as he looked straight ahead. River shivered even at that young age he carried an aura of power.

Damon went to move to his brother’s side, but a shield
slammed down around him. He struggled against it beating it with his fist, but he was trapped. The Scientist walked up to him and smiled.

“Have I ever told you I hate your brother? I do, he thinks he’s above us like you do.”

“Today one of you will suffer. You should be glad; your brother will pay for your sins.”

Damon screamed, but the shield cut off all sound. A field went around Dante and Damon dropped to the ground his face pressed against the shield as he watched them start to pull his brother apart. They didn’t stop there, he could see the pressure that was being exerted against Dante. They were trying to crush them.

When the Scientist was done laughing he gave the order to free them.

“Let him die I never liked him anyway.”

Damon followed his younger self as he knelt over his brother's body hysterical. He couldn’t do it, everything he had ever been taught left his head.

Dante reached out and touched him, his hand was almost flat every bone was broken.

“How can you still move your hand?”

“I can move because you need me, and I need you, Damon.”

  “I can’t do it, I can’t remember.”

“You have to put what you feel aside and reach for your knowledge. You can do it, Damon.”

  “I can do it.”

“Damon when you kill you will do the same thing, put your feelings aside.”

  “I will do it.”

River blinked and found herself back in the room lying in Damon’s arms.

“He could have protected himself, but he didn’t.”

  “Why?”

“My life was on the line, and he knew, even though I didn’t know.”

“What happened after we left the memory?”

“That’s the day I learned to detach. To work without feeling because my emotions could kill my family.”

“You don’t have to be detached with me, Damon. I want to feel your emotions.”

“They feel like a tidal wave that’s been waiting forever to gang up on me.”

“Share them with me, together we’ll get through them.”
